2012 Gala Auction

George Pocheptsov

Here is the exciting opportunity to bid on three original pieces of art by Wilmington’s artistic prodigy, George Popcheptsov.  Popcheptsov, currently a sophomore at Harvard University, started to paint at 17 months old, 6 months before he started to talk. The self-taught artist is compared by the press to a rising Picasso. His paintings sell for up to $200,000 in museums and galleries worldwide.  He has appeared in Time Magazine, The New York Times and has been on the Oprah Show.  His commissions include Colin Powell, Hillary Clinton, Michael Jordan, “Harry Potter” and the United Nations.  His foundation has donated more than $5 million through his artwork and he supports numerous charities, including the Carousel Center, annually.

A message from George Pocheptsov~
Every child on earth has the capacity to dream. These dreams are like birds beating against the cage of a child’s chest, yearning to embrace life and become fulfilled. When children are nurtured and shown unconditional love, these dreams reach their potential and take flight. For the children whose dreams are trapped in entanglement because of hardship, the carousel center gives these children hope and potential to shape a better future. The artwork depicts children jumping off luscious green hills and slowly flying into the horizon with the black and white swans that encourage their flight. They are experiencing a freedom to explore and pursue their passions without the anchor of hardships. The word “carousel” transcends its literal meaning as the letter \”o\” becomes the gateway to a brighter tomorrow that the carousel center strives to fulfill for these children. The carousel in the artwork is portrayed as a cage in which there are the dreams of thousand of children. The mission of the carousel center is to free these dreams from their cages, and help them come to fruition through the thoughtful care and attention to every child’s needs. The gift of dreaming for a brighter future should be a gift all children should enjoy. Let’s make it possible for these children’s dreams to come true.
