Darkness to Light (D2L) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. D2L’s flagship program, Stewards of Children®, is a two-hour training utilizing a practical, five-step approach to provide adults with the tools to protect children in their communities. Stewards of Children® is the only evidence-informed, third-party evaluated prevention training program of its kind. As a facilitator, you will be a D2L representative who is helping to spread the message of child sexual abuse prevention by providing the Stewards of Children® training to adults in your community.

Facilitator Workshop includes:

  • 7 hours of instruction, approved for continuing education by the National Association of Social Workers.
  • Instruction on the philosophy and purpose of Stewards of Children® curriculum, mastery of training concepts, program preparation & promotion, and facilitator policies and procedures.
  • All training materials including the Facilitator Manual and Stewards of Children® Workbook and DVD.

Qualifications:

  • While teaching or training experience is not required, you must feel comfortable speaking and presenting in front of large audiences. Good presentation, listening, and communication skills are all critically important in being an effective facilitator.
  • You should consider how talking about the issue regularly and openly in public will affect you personally. It is difficult to hear personal stories of abuse. You must be prepared to be immersed in the topic without it having a negative or traumatic effect on you. If you are a survivor of sexual abuse, this is an especially important consideration.

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and facilitate at least four Stewards of Children® sessions a year.
  • Purchase training materials for each person you train. The cost of the Interactive Workbook is $10. Facilitators are authorized to charge speaking and/or material fees beyond the $10 per person to cover time and expenses.
  • Sign a facilitator agreement accepting all facilitator policies and agree to a background check.

It is our goal that every adult in New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick Counties be trained to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Your decision to become a facilitator has the potential to begin a ripple effect in your immediate areas of influence (schools, nonprofits, churches, daycares, sports programs, places of employment, etc.) We look forward to partnering with you and supporting your efforts to create safer communities for our children.
